About the show

The 4th edition of the Eurovision Young Musicians competition took place at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) on May 31, 1988.

A total of 16 countries took part in the competition but only 6 made it to the final. The disqualified countries were Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Cyprus, Ireland, Sweden, France, Spain, The Netherlands and Yugoslavia. For the second year in a row, the host country did not qualify for the final. The semifinal took place on May 27, just 4 days before the Final.

It was the first time that boxes for the commentators were set in the venue so the transmission and the venue had a very special guest: Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands.

All participants had to be younger than 19 and had to perform a classical piece of their choice accompained by the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest conducted by Sergiu Comissiona.

The jury consisted of:

  • Roberto Benzi (December 12, 1937) - Italy as President of the Jury
  • Marco Riaskoff - The Netherlands
  • Pascal Rogé (April 6, 1951) - France
  • Anette Faaborg (1942) - Denmark (who hosted the 1986 Young Musicians)
  • Herman Krebbers (June 18, 1923) - The Netherlands
  • William Pleeth (January 12, 1916 - April 6, 1999) - United Kingdom
  • Sören Hermansson - Sweden
  • Osmo Vänskä (February 28, 1953) - Finland
  • Elmar Weingarten (February 20, 1942) - Germany
