Czechs pick Michaela Špačková

The Czech Republic have decided that 18-year old Michaela Špačková will represent them in this year's Eurovision Young Musicians. The Bassoonist from Prague was chosen by a jury at a selection process in Brno. She has won several prizes during her career so far, and has toured across the Continent with many different orchestras.

Michaela Špačková will fly the Czech flag in Vienna after she was selected to represent her country in the 2012 Eurovision Young Musicians competition, which takes place this May in the Austrian capital. Michaela, who is just 18, won the right to represent her country in a national selection held on February 16 in Brno.

She impressed the renowned jury with her technical virtuosity, radiant musicality and great stage performance – all of this on the bassoon.

Michaela Špačková was born on July 7th, 1993 in Prague. At the age of eight she began to study the piano and recorder with Lenka Musilova at elementary music school. She entered music high school in 2005, where she started her studies on the bassoon with Lukáš Kořínek. She plays a lot of chamber music – with different chamber ensembles and orchestras. She has won many competitions, such as Concerto Bohemia, Young Prague etc. and she performs across Europe with different orchestras.

As a soloist she has won first prize at the Czech Conservatoirs Competition. In 2010 she played as the first bassoonist with the European Youth Orchestra CEI. In 2011 she performed with Prague Chamber Philharmonic, won 2nd prize at the international competition Probohemia in Ostrava and took part in bassoon masterclasses with Václav Vonášek.
