Chisinau, Moldova -

Moldova is one of two nations making its debut in Eurovision Young Musicians 2014, and was also the final country to announce its participant for Cologne: Livyka Shtirbu-Sokolov.

A 16-year old pianist from Chisinau, Livyka has the honour of being the first ever representative from Moldova in this competition. She was selected internally by broadcaster TRM last month.

Livyka is no stranger to success on the big stage, having won the ‘Brilliant Debut’ prize during her first stage performance in 2006. Since then she has gone on to win a catalogue of other prizes, but now her focus is on Cologne. “Eurovision Young Musicians excites me tremendously” says Livyka, who is currently a ninth grade student at the C. Porumbescu Lyceum of Music in Chisinau.

Livyka is busy practising before setting off to Cologne later this week, and has her own strategy for getting herself prepared: “Whenever I perform I put together the skill of my hands, my head and the experience of my soul. I try to imagine the reaction of composers who created these pieces of music and the reaction of my audience, too” she says.

Nearly all of this year’s artists will have to ensure that they don’t forget to bring their instrument to the competition, but for Livyka, as a pianist, that’s not an issue! “On the one hand, it’s easier for pianists to pack because they can never leave the instrument at home. On the other hand, while all the participants have the possibility to study in the hotel or everywhere, even before coming on stage, pianists can recharge their batteries only in their mind. That’s why I always have a picture of Freddie Mercury because he inspires me and gives me confidence.”
