Meet André Gunko from Portugal

André Gunko is representing Portugal this year in Eurovision Young Musicians. Portugal have entered several times after debuting in 1994 but have yet to win a medal, André hopes to be the first performer form the country to achieve such a goal.

In Tuesday’s pre-round André performed two pieces which were: Gaspar Cassadó’s Suite for Solo Cello – Intermezzo e danza finale as well as Pezzo Capriccioso by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. In the final on Saturday André will perform the second movement of Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto op 85 Lento, Allegro Molto with the WDR Symphony Orchestra under the capable baton of our conductor Kirstiina Poska.

We spoke to André ahead of his first rehearsal with the orchestra and pre-round performance to find out about the man behind the cello finding out about his passion for music, his hopes for the future and how he has found the Eurovision Young Musicians experience.
